West Hartford's Memorial Day Parade To Step Off Monday
Memorial Day is a solemn mix of remembering U.S. soldiers killed in the line of duty and enjoying the unofficial start of the summer season.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford is slated to host its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 26.
It follows a tradition established by returning West Hartford veterans from World War I in the 1920s.

The parade commences promptly at 10 a.m. on Monday from the corner of Woodrow Street and Farmington Avenue and ends at West Hartford Town Hall, 50 S. Main St.

The parade features a military flyover, veterans from all military branches, the American Legion Post 96, town officials, police and fire color guards, high school and middle school marching bands, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, sports teams, and civic organizations.
Immediately following the parade each year, a brief Memorial Day ceremony is held at the Veterans Memorial to bring special meaning to the holiday.
The Veterans Memorial is located at the corner of North Main Street and Farmington Avenue.
In the event of rain, the parade is canceled, and the ceremony is moved to the town hall auditorium, 50 South Main Street, at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Town of West Hartford and the American Legion Post 96 announced that Lt. Col. Seth M. Allen, professor of military science at the University of Connecticut, is the grand marshal for the Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.
He will also be the keynote speaker for the 10th annual inductees ceremony recognizing graduating high school students entering military service on Tuesday, May 27.
Holiday Closings/Impacts
In recognition of the holiday, West Hartford Town Hall, the Yard Waste & Recycling Center, libraries, the community center, senior centers, and schools will close on Monday.
Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the collection of trash, recyclable items, and bulky waste from May 26-30, will be one day late after the Monday holiday.
Monday’s collection will be completed on Tuesday, and each remaining day of the week will be one day later than normal.

Parking
There will be free parking all day at all municipal parking sites and municipal garages on Memorial Day, May 26.
Municipal parking will resume normal operations on Tuesday, May 27, at 6 a.m.
In preparation for the Memorial Day parade, the town will implement a parking ban along the parade route starting at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, May 26.
On-street parking will be prohibited on the west side of Pleasant Street from Whitman Avenue to Farmington Avenue; on Farmington Avenue, both sides, from Walden Street to Raymond Road; and on North Main Street and South Main Street, both sides, from Brace Road to Burr Street.
The town will lift the parking ban following the parade's conclusion at about 11 a.m.
