Lisa: Living authentically - being able to “be” the same person whether in a professional, social or personal environment. Living a life with peace and tranquility. Understanding that a lot of stress is self inflicted, so take responsibility for the decisions you make–whether good or bad. Learning to not make the same mistakes twice. Living without guilt.
Patch: If you had to read three books to someone, what would they be, and why?

Lisa: 1. “The Black Diet Doctor’s Solution For Black Women”, by Robert S. Beale, Jr., MD and Lisa Beale. My father and I wrote this book coincidentally the year he died. Working together, I was able to ask him every question about how to help people lose weight. Because of this project, I was always confident that I could continue his work. 2,3: “The Untethered Soul” by Michael Singer and “Stillness Speaks” by Eckhart Tolle. Both of these books focus on how awareness, your thoughts and stillness can bring you inner peace and personal power.
Patch: How did you get involved in the health/weight loss industry?
Lisa: I worked with my father, Dr. Robert Beale, Jr., during the summers from my teenage through college years. However, in 2000 with the crash of the dotcoms, my career as a software developer was not going well. My father said I could come back to DC and work for him in operations for a few months. I told him I wanted to stay and learn how to become a weight loss counselor. When he died in the automobile accident in 2004, I vowed to continue his legacy of caring, which is what I continue to do to this day.
Patch: What was your father's inspiration to start the business?
Lisa: My father started as a family practice physician after medical school. By 1974, he realized that many of the illnesses he was treating including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis were either caused or worsened by being overweight. He helped patients lose weight so that they would not have to be on as many medications and suffer the side effects of those illnesses. He saw obesity as a disease long before others. My father was a medical weight loss pioneer.
Patch: Can you tell us a little bit about your staff and their backgrounds?
Lisa: My biggest challenge when my father died was finding a physician who had a similar level of compassion and bedside manner. I have finally found that person – Louis Brill, MD. Although Dr. Brill had spent many years doing research, his personality is calm and understanding. You can tell even in your first conversation with him that he has your best interest at heart. My front office ladies and my medical assistants have been with me over 13 years. Every one is very friendly, courteous and excellent at their jobs. At most visits you will find yourself laughing with us at some point. We have
a welcoming environment from start to finish. While Ms. Idelle Leavy (who started with my father in 1974) and Dr. Horace Laster (who started with my father in 1990), have mostly gone into retirement. They still back me up when I have to take off.
Patch: Do you have any success stories that you're most proud of?
Lisa: Eleven years after my father’s death, I am most proud that I have been able to carry on his legacy of helping people to lose weight. Every week, I have people tell me how thankful they are that we at Dr. Beale’s Medical Weight Loss were finally able to give them the right information and support they needed to reach their weight loss goals.
Patch: How does Beale’s Medical Weight Loss stand out from the competition?
Lisa: Weight loss is all we have done since 1974. We have more one-on-one personal experience in seeing what works and what does not work for losing weight. Also, most importantly, before starting our weight loss plan, we do a physical exam with blood work, urinalysis, body measurements, medication review, and eating / lifestyle review. After the physician and I have reviewed the results, then we develop the safe and effective plan for that person. There is no “one size fits all.” The One-On-One Medical Weight Loss Counseling is weekly because we want to make sure the person is losing weight. If they hit a plateau, we find a solution immediately. We help them right away with any challenges that they are facing. Our prices are also very reasonable for the services received – we do not gauge people with extra fees to get the help they need. I understand the financial challenges of today, so I allow a no-interest payment plan and I offer several specials throughout the year.
Patch: What would you tell a reader who wants to lose weight and improve his or her health, but does not know where to start?
Lisa: Going to the grocery store each week, taking lunch to work, drinking 2 quarts of water per day and walking an extra 30 minutes a few times a week can definitely begin to make a change in a person’s health and weight.
Patch: How are you involved in the community?
Lisa: I have been a participant in several free health fairs that are open to the public. I am also part of a national service organization where I have served as a tutor and a mentor for young ladies. With Dr. Beale’s Medical Weight Loss, for those people on public health assistance such as Medicaid and Medicare, I personally give a discount for our services.
Patch: When is the right time or how can a reader know how to seek out professional medical help to lose weight?
Lisa: If a person has made changes in their eating and exercise, but the weight is not coming off, then it is time to reach out to Dr. Beale's medical weight loss.
