5 Shot Near Howard University During Homecoming Celebration
The shooting happened in the 600 block of Howard Place Northwest as the school was holding its homecoming Yardfest.

WASHINGTON, DC — Five people were injured on Friday night in a shooting near Howard University in Washington, D.C., according to police.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith said the shooting happened in the 600 block of Howard Place Northwest as the school was holding its homecoming Yardfest.
Shortly after 8:20 p.m., police officers in the area responded to the site of the shooting after hearing gunshots, Smith said. When officers arrived, they found three men, one woman and one juvenile male suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. According to Smith, none of the victims were Howard University students.
Two suspects were taken into custody and three weapons were recovered at the scene, Smith said.

Authorities have not determined what led up to the shooting.
"Whether they’re young people or adults with guns, we need folks to put these guns down in our city," Smith said. "What we do know is that this is Howard’s homecoming, and most of the homecoming festivities around our cities are joyous occasions for our families to come out and enjoy a good time."
