📰 News we're reading

1. An audit of ANC Chair Salim Adofo reveals nearly $18k in expenditures misappropriated (wusa9.com) — District auditors say nearly $18,000 in spending by ANC 8C under Chair Salim Adofo couldn’t be verified as allowable, and they’re urging reimbursement and tighter financial policies in Washington. The commission acknowledges past administrative problems and pandemic-era challenges but disputes some findings, saying it acted in good faith and is improving oversight and transparency for Ward 8 residents.

2. Uber faces legal battle as 21 states join FTC in consumer protection lawsuit (dcnewsnow.com) — Washington has joined 21 states and the FTC in a lawsuit accusing Uber of making its Uber One subscription hard to cancel and charging customers before free trials end. With over 100,000 local subscribers and Uber deeply woven into daily life here, the case could determine refunds and future protections for DC riders and delivery users.

3. Unemployment numbers for Black adults jumps to nearly double national jobless rate (wjla.com) — Washington’s unemployment rate has climbed to 6.2%, far above Virginia and Maryland and paired with a maximum unemployment benefit of just $444 a week, leaving many residents struggling to cover rent. New federal data also show Black Americans facing the highest jobless rate nationally, and an expert warns that underemployment and teen joblessness signal deep economic stress across the DC region.

4. Capitals enjoying run of excellence, are 'model for success in the NHL' (nhl.com) — Washington Capitals fans in D.C. can revel in how far their hometown team has come, from a struggling expansion franchise to a consistent Stanley Cup contender. The piece walks through Alex Ovechkin’s record-shattering era, key front-office moves, and coaching changes that turned Washington into what some insiders now call the NHL’s model organization.
