D.C. Cyclists Killed By Driver Who Suffered Medical Event: Police

Two D.C. residents were struck and killed after a driver suffered a medical event and "blacked out" behind the wheel in Dewey Beach.

DEWEY BEACH, DE — Two D.C. residents were struck and killed after a driver suffered a medical event and "blacked out" behind the wheel in Dewey Beach, police said.

The crash occurred along Delaware State Route 1 at about 5 p.m. Saturday, killing the men ages 53 and 58.

Police said the driver, a 61-year-old man from New York, blacked out from an acute medical event and accelerated his SUV toward the men, who were sitting on their bikes outside of Starboard Bar and Restaurant.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. They have not been identified pending notification of next of kin.

The driver was transported to the hospital for treatment. Police do not believe impairment or distraction was a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
