Dangerous Heat Returning This Week: Washington, DC Weather Forecast

The break in the high temperatures over the past few days is about to move out of the area, and will be replaced by 100-degree heat and storm threats, according to the latest forecast.

The heat index, or "feels like" temperature, will climb to the upper 90s by Wednesday and is expected to hit 100 degrees by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Areas east of Interstate 95 and along the interstate may see these temperatures reach the low 100s.

The heat index will stay high through the weekend, according to forecasters.

There also will be a chance for thunderstorms daily this week, with the best chance for storms this weekend.

Monday is expected to have slightly cooler temperatures, but maintains the storm chances.

Here's the latest forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 92. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 94. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 94. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 93. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
