DC Library Listed Among 20 Most Beautiful Libraries In US

A library in Washington, DC has been named among "20 Most Beautiful Libraries" in the nation.

WASHINGTON, DC — In the world of libraries, DC has some real gems, especially The Library of Congress. This iconic institution made the list of the "20 Most Beautiful Libraries in the U.S." compiled by Curbed.

"No round up of the most stunning libraries in the United States would be complete without the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.," Curbed says.

The largest library in the world, the Library of Congress spans across three buildings on Capitol Hill. It is recognized as the national library of the U.S. and serves as the research arm of Congress.

The Library's collections contain more than 39 million books and other printed materials, 3.6 million recordings, 14.8 million photographs, 5.5 million maps and 72 million manuscripts.

The Library was founded in 1800, making it the oldest federal cultural institution in the country.

The most well-known structure is the Thomas Jefferson Building, which houses the Main Reading Room and the Great Hall, which rises 75 feet from marble floor to stained glass ceiling.
