Police believe it was a random attack, and that Crawford had stolen the knife from a nearby grocery store shortly before the attack, WTOP reports, noting that his lawyers had argued he had a history of mental illness. However, a court-ordered psychologist said that although he has some mental issues, he had the capacity to make rational decisions.
