Man Who Set Himself On Fire At White House Has Died: Report

WASHINGTON, DC -- The man who set himself on fire on the Ellipse in front of the White House on Wednesday has died from his injuries, according to a report.

The Washington Post reports that 33-year-old Arnav Gupta of Bethesda -- who had been reported missing that same day by Montgomery County Police -- was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and he later succumbed to his injuries.

Montgomery County Police posted a notice Wednesday morning indicating "concern" for Gupta, who was last seen after leaving his home at around 9:20 a.m. U.S. Park Police say he set himself on fire at 12:25 p.m. The investigation has been turned over to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident calls to mind a similar one last month, when a man set his jacket on fire outside the White House.

Self-immolation has historically been an extreme form of protest. A photo of Thích Quảng Đức's self-immolation during the Buddhist crisis in South Vietnam is one of the most famous images in the world.

There is no indication yet of what Gupta may have been protesting.
