WASHINGTON, DC -- It has been an eventful 2019 for bald eagle couple Liberty and Justice. The latest twist: a raccoon has eaten the two eggs Liberty laid last month while the couple was away from the nest, according to a report.

The eggs were non-viable anyway thanks to a lot of drama that unfolded after Liberty and Justice mated for the 14th consecutive year. It's a long story, and you can read all about it and the D.C. Eagle Cam here.

The sneaky raccoon managed to scramble all the way to the top of the tree high above the D.C police academy in Southwest.

As the Eagle Cam Log stated: "Raccoon enters nest, digs up and cracks both eggs, seems to eat from them. Left shells in nest at 9:05 p.m."

Justice has only recently returned to the nest after a long absence, and the two mated over the weekend. However, the season has passed so there will be no new eggs, and therefore no eagle chicks at that location this year.

But, at least Liberty and Justice are still together, and we'll see what happens next spring.
