Sinkhole Opens Near White House, Twitter Goes Nuts

For the second time in a year, a sinkhole has been reported in the vicinity of the White House. Twitter users had fun with the situation.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Police have reported a sinkhole in the road just a block from the White House -- the second time in less than a year that one has been reported in the vicinity.

D.C. police tweeted at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday that a "Large Sinkhole" had formed in the roadway on 17th Street NW between C and E street, and the area was closed in both directions.

A staffer for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) tweeted a photo of the sinkhole, which appears to be a few feet wide and is directly in the center of a lane of traffic on D Street.

Last summer, a sinkhole formed on the White House lawn near the press briefing room, which required workers to spend about a week repairing it.

Not surprisingly, jokes about the situation were easy to find on Twitter.
