Third Suspect Arrested In Woodrow Wilson Grad Murder

Police arrested a third suspect in the murder of Jamahri Sydnor​, a Woodrow Wilson High School grad who was shot by a stray bullet Aug. 10.

WASHINGTON, DC — Police arrested a third suspect for the murder of Jamahri Sydnor, a Woodrow Wilson High School graduate who was shot by a stray bullet Aug. 10.

James Mayfield, 18, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed Wednesday, police said. Police asked for the public's assistance in locating Mayfield last month.

Police arrested Robert Moses, 18, of Northeast on Oct. 27 and charged him with first-degree murder. Phillip Carlos McDaniel, 21, of Northeast was charged in August with assault with intent to kill.

Sydnor, of Northeast, was driving in broad daylight in the 1400 block of Saratoga Ave. on Thursday, Aug. 10 when she was shot at about 3:32 p.m., police said. She was less than a mile away from her home.

"We have young men that go out there and they feel like they can resolve disputes with a firearm," Chief of Police Peter Newsham said. "What we had here is we had an innocent person that was caught up in that."

Arriving officers found an adult male and Sydnor suffering from gunshot wounds. Sydnor was taken to an area hospital and succumbed to her injuries Saturday, Aug. 12, police told Patch.

"It's sickening. There are no words for it, to lose a young girl who's done everything right," D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

Sydnor recently graduated Woodrow Wilson High School in Northwest. She was the captain of her school's cheerleading squad and a member of the choir, NBC Washington reports. She was set to start college at Florida A&M within a few days after she was killed.

"She was the embodiment of what we want a Wilson grad to be," Principal Kimberly Martin told NBC Washington.

A $25,000 reward is being offered for the arrest and conviction of Mayfield. Policedescribe him as a black male with a dark complexion who is 5'8" tall and weighs 150 pounds.
