Washington D.C. Police Chief Announces Retirement, Will Join NFL
Cathy Lanier has served with the Municipal Police Department for 26 years.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Municipal Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier will retire in September to take a job as head of security for the National Football League, according to a message from the department and the NFL.
Lanier has served with the department for 26 years, including the last 10 years as chief.
In a statement announcing Lanier as the new senior vice president of security, the NFL said that Lanier would be based in the league's New York office and start work immediately after she steps down from her post with the Metropolitan Police Department.

Lanier will be responsible for supervising "all operations and activities of the NFL security department," the statement notes, adding that the role includes overseeing security at the Super Bowl and international games, as well as working with local law enforcement to ensure security of the NFL's venues.
“We are excited to welcome to our team an individual of Cathy’s talent and extensive record of accomplishments,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in the statement. “Cathy joins us with a well-deserved reputation of being a tremendous communicator, innovator and relationship builder.”
