Watch Replay: Sean Spicer Addresses Michael Flynn Resignation At Briefing

The administration's press secretary will conduct his daily question and answer session with the press.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer met with members of the press Tuesday for the daily briefing at 1 p.m. Eastern.

After the high-profile resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn Monday night over his communications with Russia, questions were focused on the former official's actions, what the administration knew about the incident and any potential future investigations.

In his opening statement, Spicer said that Flynn was let go because of his mischaracterization of his communications with the Russian ambassador, rather than because he did anything specifically illegal, or that he was inappropriately connected with Russia.

Spicer insisted that there was no legal problem with Flynn's communication with Russia. Trump asked for Flynn's resignation because it had become "a matter of trust."

"As far as we're aware, that was an isolated incident that occurred," Spicer said.

Specifically, Spicer indicated that the trust has eroded because Flynn misled Vice President Mike Pence when he said he had not discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador.

"The irony of this entire situation is the the president has been very tough on Russia," Spicer said.

Spicer also insisted that Trump did not instruct Flynn to discuss sanctions with Russian officials. He also said that an "erosion of trust" has occurred because of the deception, and also other unnamed "issues."

Asked whether the White House would participate in any investigations from Congress, Spicer said it would follow the law.

But Spicer insisted, as the president tweeted Tuesday morning, that the leaks surrounding Flynn's actions were also an important story that needed to be covered.

He ended by wishing the press corps a happy Valentine's Day.
