NAPLES, Fla. ― We’re nearly two months into 2024. How is your resolution holding up? For many folks, the desire to start off the new year by purging unnecessary items and doing a deep clean may have been an ambitious undertaking.

But fear not! The time for spring cleaning is right around the corner. Locally, Home Clean Heroes of Southwest Florida devised a 30-day declutter challenge to help folks start 2024 on a good foot. However, if you’ve got your eyes on a spring clean feeling, it works just as well.

To begin your journey, it’s important to make a plan. Steven Biafore, owner of Home Clean Heroes of Southwest Florida, said the first step in successfully cleaning is to declutter.

“Clutter can hide dirt, dust, and grime, making it difficult to clean properly,” Biafore said. “By decluttering first, you ensure that you can clean every surface thoroughly, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment.”

If you’re diving into a deep clean for the first time in a while, there can be many items that you’re hesitant to part with. Biafore pointed out that sentimental items, unused or broken items, and old furniture tend to linger. Unfortunately, it’s easy to tuck things away, causing the clutter and mess to build up.

“It can be an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality,” Biafore said. “For example, items stored in the garage may be out of sight and therefore out of mind, making it easier for people to forget about them or postpone decisions about what to do with them. This can result in the accumulation of unused or unnecessary items over time.”

Home Clean Heroes recommends splitting your journey up day by day, like so:

  • Day 1: Start a donation box of old clothes. At the end of the 30 days, donate what you’ve collected.
  • Day 2: Give everything a home! Find a place for your keys, coats, purses, etc.
  • Day 3: Kitchen counter. Find a home for that mail or those items that lie haphazardly on the counter.

By attacking different areas of your home one step at a time, you’re more likely to do a successful clean and won’t give up after a few hours.

“Decluttering can have a psychological benefit, creating a sense of order and calm in your environment, which can make the cleaning process more manageable,” Biafore noted.
