CORAL GABLES, FL — A suspected armed robber took his own life Tuesday night when confronted by police after he allegedly stole mobile phone equipment and cash from a T-Mobile store in Southwest Miami-Dade County, not far from Miami.

Detective Lee Cowart of the Miami-Dade Police Department told Patch that the suspected bandit allegedly robbed the business at 7000 SW 8 St. around 9:08 p.m.

"Working with the victims, MDPD officers were able to track the subject using the cellular telephone equipment that the subject had stolen," Cowart explained.

"Before officers were able to take the subject into custody, the subject shot himself with his own weapon," Cowart said.

The man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center by the Coral Gables Fire Department where he later died.

None of the police officers were injured, according to Cowart.
