Shotgun-Wielding Man Killed By Police; Miami-Dade Officer Wounded

NORTH MIAMI, FL -- A shotgun-wielding man wearing a bulletproof vest was shot and killed by police Saturday afternoon during a confrontation in which a Miami-Dade police officer was also wounded, according to police.

"The North Miami Police Department received calls of a male walking in the area of West Dixie Highway and NE 119 Street, wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest while armed with a shotgun," explained Detective Lee Cowart of the Miami-Dade Police Department. "Attempts were made to negotiate with the subject, resulting in shots being fired."

The man, who was not immediately identified by police, was pronounced dead on the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The wounded officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where he was listed in stable condition.

"Preliminary information received thus far indicates that a shotgun and a bulletproof vest have been recovered from the scene," Cowart said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation into the shooting in accordance with Miami-Dade County policy.
