Crabmeat Sold In GA Stores Recalled Over Listeria Concerns: FDA

Irvington Seafood has recalled its crabmeat, which was sold in four states, including Georgia, due to the possibility of Listeria, says FDA.

GEORGIA — After a recent recall on certain Irvington Seafood packages, Georgia shoppers have been urged to double-check their purchases, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Alabama-based company has recalled its 1 lb. packages of Crabmeat, which include "Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat" because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria, according to a news release. No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.

Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Potential Contamination

The potential for contamination was noted on May 27 after the FDA tested on May 9. The Listeria was found on cooking equipment and in a cooking room, according to the news release.

The FDA says that although no crabmeat has been tested, the product may have potentially been contaminated with Listeria due to cross-contamination.

The production of the product has been suspended, while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 1 lb. packages of "Crabmeat" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company via email Kammie1101@gmail.com or by telephone.
