$2K Reward Offered In Athens Shooting That Killed 3-Year-Old: Police

The Spring Valley Road shooting killed a 3-year-old child and injured another child in Athens-Clarke County. Two suspects are at large.

ATHENS, GA — A $2,000 reward is being offered in connection with a Spring Valley Road shooting that killed a 3-year-old child Friday at a mobile home park, Athens-Clarke County Police said Monday.

The fatal shooting happened around 5:30 p.m., when two children were shot, police said. A 3-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other child was taken to a local hospital with non-threatening injuries, police said.

Police initially said an adult was injured in the shooting; however, police said Saturday the adult was treated for non-threatening injuries not sustained in the shooting.

Details that led to the shooting are unknown, and a motive was not revealed.

Police said Friday a suspect identified as Julian Cubillos, 17, of Lawrenceville, was arrested with the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in connection with the shooting.

Cubillos was charged on suspicion of malice and felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, police said.

Police said warrants have been obtained to charge two additional suspects, 16-year-old Jayden Brown and 18-year-old Dakious Echols, on suspicion of the same charges as Cubillos.

Echols and Brown remained at large early Monday afternoon. Police said Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information relating to their whereabouts.

“I am sickened by this heinous crime, and my heart aches for the grieving family, friends and loved ones who are suffering such a tragic loss,” Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Jerry Saulters said in a news release. “The Athens-Clarke County Police Department will dedicate our full strength and resources to bring the killers to justice.”
