ACC Leisure Services earns GRPA's Agency of the Year and volunteer honors for Sandy Creek Nature Center (redandblack.com) — Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services just earned GRPA’s District 7 Agency of the Year, while Sandy Creek Nature Center’s Trail Guides program won top volunteer honors. From the Downtown Parade of Lights to Snake Day and daily programs at parks, Morton Theatre, and the planetarium, the department highlights how many free and low-cost ways Athenians can get outside, learn, and connect.
   

2. Boys & Girls Club of Athens in search for new CEO (onlineathens.com) — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens is searching for a new CEO after the resignation of Shawonna Coleman, with staff member Kirk Dominick stepping in as interim leader to keep club operations stable for local youth and families. The organization has seen several leadership changes in the past year, and board leaders are reassuring the Athens community that safety and consistency remain their top priorities.
   

3. Third person announces candidacy for District 5 commission seat in Athens (onlineathens.com) — A new candidate has joined the race for the Athens-Clarke County District 5 commission seat, which will be open as current commissioner Dexter Fisher runs for mayor. Longtime health care professional Kimberly Bennett says she wants to build a more connected Athens where families, small businesses, and neighborhoods thrive, drawing on her nonprofit leadership and work at the University of Georgia.
   

4. Jackson EMC Foundation awards $15K to agencies serving Madison County residents (mainstreetnews.com) — A regional electric cooperative foundation has awarded $10,000 to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia in Athens to support its Food Access Initiative, which supplies food across Clarke and surrounding counties. Another $5,000 went to a Dacula pantry serving some of the same areas. Residents and organizations in Athens-Clarke and nine other counties can apply online for future Jackson EMC Foundation grants.
   

5. Elberton teenager charged in killing of McDonald's employee (onlineathens.com) — A teenager from nearby Elberton has been charged with murder after another teen was fatally shot during an altercation at a local McDonald’s, a case now handled by the GBI. The story briefly references an Oconee blotter item about an Athens man intervening after hearing a woman scream, underscoring how regional crime issues can touch Athens-area residents.
