Woman Killed, Man Charged With Murder In Fatal Athens Hit-And-Run

The woman was waiting at a bus stop when she was hit by a car that then fled the scene, Athens-Clarke County Police said.

ATHENS, GA — A 45-year-old Athens woman waiting at a bus stop was killed in a hit-and-run Sunday evening in the 2000 block of Atlanta Highway, Athens-Clarke County Police said Monday.

Police said the woman was waiting at the bus stop around 6:15 p.m. when she was hit and killed by a vehicle, which police said then fled the scene.

Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the woman was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said. Police identified the woman as Shelby Cox.

Police identified the hit-and-run suspect as Jeffery Scott Tate, 58, of Athens. Police said Tate was taken into custody with the help of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

Tate was charged on suspicion of murder, hit and run(resulting in serious injury/death), reckless driving and failure to maintain lane, police said.
