Verizon customers across Georgia continue to experience disruptions to their wireless voice and data services Wednesday afternoon. According to Downdetector, a website that collects user-submitted reports of outages, the Atlanta region is among the areas most impacted by the Verizon outage.

Area residents are reporting they've been without service for several hours.

Atlanta Police said its E-911 system was "fully operational," able to receive incoming emergency calls and place outgoing calls.

"We have received reports from Verizon customers indicating their cellular devices are displaying 'SOS' mode. While most mobile phones are able to place emergency calls to 911 in this mode, residents are reminded to use 911 only for true emergencies and not to check the status of their device or service," police said in a post published to Facebook.

Verizon acknowledged the issue publicly on Wednesday afternoon, posting a statement on X regarding the service disruption.

"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers," Verizon said on the social media platform.

The company said its engineering teams were actively involved in addressing the problem.

Other areas where significant outages were reported include New York City, Miami and Philadelphia.

Around 4:15 p.m., Verizon tweeted: "Verizon's team is on the ground actively working to fix today’s service issue that is impacting some customers. We know this is a huge inconvenience, and our top priority is to get you back online and connected as fast as possible. We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this issue."

Verizon users could call 911 in Atlanta, but police said some of them may not be able to make outgoing calls. In this regard, police say residents can use the APD's online dispatch portal or the Text-to-911 option when available.

It was not immediately known how long the outage would last.
