MARTA Officer Fatally Shoots Man Accused Of Pointing Gun: GBI

The MARTA officer fatally shot the man after the man "reached in the direction of the gun" at the metro ATL train station, the GBI said.

COLLEGE PARK, GA — A man accused of reaching for a gun was shot and killed by an officer Sunday at a MARTA station, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday.

The GBI said the police shooting happened around 7:40 p.m. The man, who was not identified, was accused of pointing a gun at another person when authorities were alerted to the scene.

A MARTA officer found and followed the man, who had a gun, the GBI said. The officer gave commands, and the man then turned toward the officer and "reached in the direction of the gun," the GBI said.

The officer then shot the man, the GBI said. The man was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the GBI said. A gun was found near the man, the GBI said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the man.

Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
