Stacey Abrams Filing Lawsuit Over Alleged Election Mismanagement

Abrams lost a tight race for governor to Brian Kemp. She is now is filing a lawsuit over alleged election mismanagement.

ATLANTA, GA -- In the wake of her loss to Republican Brian Kemp in Georgia's nationally watched governor's race, Stacey Abrams and her new organization, Fair Fight Georgia, announced they are filing a federal lawsuit alleging election mismanagement. Fair Fight, according to a press release, is “an operation that will pursue accountability in Georgia’s elections and integrity in the process of maintaining our voting rolls.”

Abrams said her lawsuit "will have the potential to improve Georgia election administration for decades to come."

Also joining Abrams in the lawsuit is state Sen. Nikema Williams, who was arrested during a demonstration inside the state capitol over the election results.

"Let me be clear: What happened on November 6 was anything but a free and fair election," Abrams said in an email Monday afternoon to her supporters. "It was not fair to the millions of Georgians who were purged from the voting rolls. It was not fair to the thousands who were forced to wait in line to vote for two, three, four hours because polling places were under-resourced and unprepared. Or worse, to those who had no polling place available to them because more than 300 had been closed down.

"It was not fair to the thousands of Georgians who had their voter registrations put on hold, or to those who did not receive their absentee ballots in time or at all, despite having requested them far in advance. For eight years, Brian Kemp oversaw the systematic dismantling of our democracy and of voting rights in Georgia. But make no mistake, what happened on November 6 will not happen again.

"Tomorrow, we will file a major federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia for the gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections from unconstitutional actions."
