Union City Police Officer Recovering After Shooting

UNION CITY, GA -- A Union City police officer was shot in the line of duty early Monday evening in a shooting that left the suspect dead. The shooting happened on Highpoint Road in Union City, which is located in southern Fulton County, around 6 pm.

Channel 2 is reporting the suspect was 19, although police have not released the name of the officer, the suspect, or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed it has been called in to take over the case, which is standard procedure in Georgia in all officer-involved shootings.

The officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where Channel 2 captured videos of police cruisers speeding into the entrance of the hospital's emergency room.

Union City Mayor Vince Williams told the station the officer underwent surgery Monday night for his injuries.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported the officer was shot multiple times.

On Tuesday, Channel 2 identified the officer as Jerome Turner, Jr., who is recovering from his injuries. The station also identified the deceased suspect as Veltavious Griggs, 19.
