Brookhaven Elections: Ernst Draws A Challenger, Mattison Out

Brookhaven will elect a new District 3 councilperson for the first time since 2012.

BROOKHAVEN, GA — Mayor John Ernst drew a challenger on the final day of qualifying for Brookhaven's 2019 elections, as Jennifer Heath is running against the man who has been mayor of the city since 2015. Also, one of the city's first city councilmen, Bates Mattison, chose not to run for reelection in District 3, meaning the district will elect a new representative for the first time since the city's founding.

"After discussing it with my family and friends, I have decided not to seek reelection for my city council seat," Mattison said. "It has been one of my greatest honors to help start the city seven years ago working to represent the citizens of Brookhaven, but I truly want to focus on my family before my children reach college age. This has been difficult decision to reach, but I hope you understand my reasoning. I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Brookhaven until the end of my term and thank you all for the confidence and support you’ve given me over the past seven years."

Madeleine Norine Simmons are both seeking to replace Mattison in District 3. Meanwhile, in the city's only remaining election, City Councilperson Linley Jones in District 1 is running unopposed.
