Drowning Victim Recovered From Lake Allatoona Near Hwy. 41 Campground
A 37-year-old man from Ellijay drowned Friday morning in the area near Old Highway 41 #3 Campground, according to Bartow County authorities.
CARTERSVILLE, GA — A Gilmer County man drowned Friday in Lake Allatoona near Acworth, authorities said.
The victim is identified as 37-year-old Charles Matthews of Ellijay, WBHF Community Radio in Cartersville reported.
Rescue units arrived Friday morning at Old Highway 41 #3 Campground after an eyewitness saw Matthews swimming, then appearing “to be in distress" and going under, according to a statement from Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services.

Bartow County fireboats helped the Georgia Department of Natural Resources with search and rescue efforts, eventually locating and recovering Matthews’ body.
