East Point Company helps Young Women get Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Degrees

Dr. Lisa Richardson who is an avid Cascade Patch supporter recently shared with us a new program that she is working on to help girls enter into a STEM education program.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and the numbers show that it is absolutely crucial for young women and girls to get more interested in these fields and to excel in these fields.

Codenistas is a weekend STEM education program designed to help girls - especially girls of color - to see technology fields as attractive career goals.  "My goal for the program is to increase the representation of young women in the technology start-up space," said Dr. Richardson.  "By housing the program at my co-working center, Codenistas will benefit from mentoring from other entrepreneurs and professionals in technology fields."

The Codenistas program is housed inside Spout Lab, a co-working facility in Downtown East Point. The in-house business community at Spout Lab provides extraordinary opportunities for participants to be mentored by business owners creating and developing the with technologies they learn each week.

The curriculum includes programming, graphic design, web design, and culminates each term with a Pitchfest, where Codenistas present their projects and deliver their best elevator pitch as they would to venture capitalist judges.
