Hurricane Irma: Decatur And DeKalb Schools Will Be Closed Tuesday, Sept. 12

DeKalb County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12 due to the effects of Hurricane Irma.

DECATUR, GA -- As tropical force winds thrashed Atlanta on Monday, increasing the risks of falling trees and strong wind gusts, the city of Decatur and the DeKalb County School District announced classes will be canceled and administration offices closed for Tuesday, Sept. 12. Metro Atlanta will continue to feel the effects of the fast-moving storm until the sunshine returns Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The city of Decatur school district said that in addition to no classes on Tuesday, there will be no after-school activities. The Board of Education meeting set for Tuesday will be rescheduled.

Public safety officials in Miami were still assessing the damage as millions of people reported that their power was out in South Florida.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected to thrash Georgia and parts of metro Atlanta for much of Monday.

In Decatur, sanitation services will remain off-line Tuesday, the cit said. To get back on track for trash and recycling pickup, Decatur released the following schedule:

  • If your regular collection day is Monday, your items will now be collected on Wednesday, September 13. Please wait to set out your cans and bins until 7:30 on Wednesday morning.
  • If your regular collection day is Tuesday, your items will now be collected on Thursday, September 14.
  • If your regular collection day is Thursday or Friday, your items will now be collected on Friday, September 15.
