How Safe Is Your Swimming Pool? Some Safety Tips for Homeowners

The 5-year-old son of singer Usher and his ex-wife Tameka Raymond nearly drowned when his arm got stuck in a drain while playing in a pool at the performer's home. According to Usher's website, his son, whom they call "Cinco," is doing well.

In 2011, a Gwinnett County girl got her arm stuck in a pool's vacuum system.

Here are five tips from Pool Safely to make sure your pool is safe:

1. Always have constant supervision around pools and spas.
2. Make sure there is a secure fence and gate around pools and spas.
3. Add alarms to the pool, door and gate to alert you if someone enters the pool or the pool area.
4. Keep pools and spas covered when not in use.
5. Make sure pool and spa safety drain covers are installed and in good condition. They are required by law.
