Officer Saves Dunwoody Toddler Who Was Choking On Food
A Dunwoody police sergeant used a device to pull food and fluid from the toddler's airway before the boy was taken to a hospital.
DUNWOODY, GA — A Dunwoody police officer is being credited with recently saving an 18-month-old boy from choking on food at a Queensborough Drive home.
Dunwoody Police said officers responded around 6 p.m., Aug. 12, to the home. Police said when a police sergeant arrived at the scene, the boy was unconscious and had turned blue. The boy was struggling to breathe, police said.
The sergeant used a LifeVac choking device to remove pieces of food and fluid from the boy's airway, police said. DeKalb County firefighters arrived to assist at the scene.

After the child was put into an ambulance, police said the child regained consciousness and slowly began to breathe on his own with his vital signs stabilized.
The boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite, where he was treated and fully recovered, police said.

Each Dunwoody patrol is equipped with the LifeVac devices, which police said were donated to the police department from the Dunwoody Police Foundation.
The police sergeant received the Medal of Meritorious Service during Monday's city council meeting for helping the boy, police said.
