Shootout Over Drugs, GBI Arrests Shooter In Critical Condition

The accused murderer was transported to the Gwinnett Medical Center, in Lawrenceville, where he is in critical condition.

Norcross, GA (May 30, 2019) – After an early Thursday shootout over drugs, one man is dead and another is in critical condition and arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI was requested by the Norcross Police Department (PD) to assist with a homicide investigation, at approximately 12:55 a.m.

The Norcross Police Department were responding to a 911 call reporting a fight and gunfire at the Allround Suites Hotel located at 3175 Medlock Bridge Road. Norcross PD officers located a deceased man in a hotel room who appeared to have been shot multiple times.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

According to the GBI, the investigation determined that Mustafa Powell, 36, confronted the victim over a narcotics-related issue and shot him. During the confrontation, the victim returned fire and Powell sustained two gunshot wounds, police said.

Powell fled the scene but was later found receiving treatment at the Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth. Powell was transported to the Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville where he is in critical condition.

Powell is charged with murder.

The other man’s autopsy will be conducted by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office.
