Bags to Riches: Grocery Store Bagger Wins $3M in Lottery

In case you missed it, the Gwinnett man purchased the winning ticket at the same Publix store where he works.

Richard Shy, 65, has been bagging groceries for 15 years at a Gwinnett County grocery store and it paid off in a big way this week, according to the Georgia Lottery.

Quite literally.

Shy won $3 million in the lottery’s Jumbo Bucks Lotto with Ca$h Match game after buying the winning ticket at the same Lilburn-area Publix Super Market where he works. The store is located at 4045 Five Forks Trickum Road.

Shy picked his own numbers, based on special dates, then later checked the results of the drawing during his lunch break.

He says he intends to use the money to pay bills and for investments.

“I have a game plan in process to take one step at a time,” he said.

The second jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Cedartown.

Jumbo Bucks drawings are held at 11 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays.
