Here are the top three stories in Sandy Springs today:
- On Wednesday, the metro Atlanta area experienced its all-time warmest February day with temperatures reaching the 80s. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport broke the previous monthly and daily temperature records, reaching 81 degrees. While record-warm temperatures are becoming more common due to the warming climate and the Urban Heat Island Effect, researchers are studying how it may be impacting minorities disproportionately. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- The Dunwoody Police Department has stated that no charges will be filed against the individuals who distributed anti-Semitic flyers in predominantly Jewish neighborhoods of Dunwoody and Sandy Springs, following consultations with the District Attorney's office. Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan said that the issue falls under free speech and that the flyers contained no threats or calls to action. The incident has led to increased support for House Bill 30, which seeks to define and ban crimes against Jewish people, but would not have affected the flyers as they do not constitute an underlying crime or unlawful act. (WSB Atlanta)
- Sandy Springs Fire Chief, Keith Sanders, is seeking permission from the city council to apply for a grant program — the FY2022 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program — that would allow the fire department to purchase additional helmets and bail-out kits for its personnel. With only one helmet provided to each firefighter, a second helmet would better protect them from dangerous carcinogens and chemicals, particularly if they need to go from one fire to another. The bail-out kits would also provide an added layer of safety, allowing firefighters to quickly exit multi-story buildings through windows in case of emergency. The total cost of the equipment and training is estimated to be $124,100, with Sandy Springs required to provide a $12,410 match if awarded the grant. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
