Man Dies In Sandy Springs Police Shooting, GBI Says

The man who was accused of assaulting a woman who was walking her dog near a MARTA bus stop was shot and killed in a police shooting.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A Mississippi man who was shot by police after being accused of assaulting a woman Thursday in Sandy Springs has died, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Friday.

The police shooting killed LaAndre Marktanne Thomas, 27, of Jackson, who was accused of assaulting a woman who was walking her dog near a MARTA bus stop around 10:30 a.m. in the 8000 block of Dunwoody Place, the GBI said.

While investigating, authorities said officers reviewed video footage and later located Thomas. He approached the officers and began conversing with them, the GBI said.

Thomas pulled out a handgun from his waistband while speaking with them, and an officer shot Thomas, the GBI said.

He was then taken to a local hospital, where he died Thursday, the GBI said. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Thomas' body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, the GBI said.

Once the GBI's investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
