Alice feels the families are too different and the marriage will never work, but Tony believes that it will. Tony is confident of the love and warmth he feels for the Sycamores, especially Alice’s mother, Penny, and Alice's grandfather. It is grandpa who eventually brings everyone together with his philosophical views on life.
