Preston Stewart, 18, of Sandy Springs, researched, planned and built the structure as his Eagle Scout Service Project, which replaced the original 20-year old bridge that was damaged by lightning in 2011.

"It was inspiring to watch Preston take on this project which helped him earn his Boy Scout Eagle rank," said Carol Thompson, Executive Director of Heritage Sandy Springs. "The bridge crosses a stream at an especially picturesque place at Heritage Green. It will serve as a safe and needed footpath..."

Stewart, a Riverwood International Charter School senior who joined Troop 74 in 2006, undertook his bridge building project in February of 2012.  When he learned a new bridge was needed, Stewart chose a simple design that would complement the surrounding area.

A total of 444 personal and volunteer hours were logged by Stewart and fellow Scouts, adult Scouts, family, friends, Riverwood football and lacrosse teammates and coaches, who helped complete the project.

“Throughout the process of my Eagle Service Project, I was constantly faced with new obstacles," said Stewart. "The training Scouts provided me, especially in the form of leadership, helped me overcome these challenges with creative thinking and minimal effort.”

"Heritage Sandy Springs is very appreciative to be on the receiving end of his project, which leaves an enduring and attractive mark on our community,” Thompson said.
