Here are the top three stories today in Sandy Springs:
- The Sandy Springs City Council has approved the purchase of two properties along Mt. Vernon Highway. The first property, owned by the estate of Doris Waddell Spruill, will be acquired for $2.2 million, and structures will be demolished to construct a connector road. The second property, owned by Autumn Chace Homeowners Association, will be used to improve a road on Mt. Vernon Highway. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- Atlanta City Council members are proposing a new social studies course for nearby Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students that would focus on the city's history, landmarks, and government. Councilmembers Keisha Waites and Matt Westmoreland sponsored an ordinance to create the course "Atlanta History," which will count as a student social science credit. The course will highlight the city's historic significance, notable leaders, and significant moments, including difficult events such as the Atlanta Race Massacre of 1906 and the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981. - Chay J's New Orleans Candies is a family-owned business run by a brother and sister duo serving traditional New Orleans sweets to the metro Atlanta area. The family legacy began with their father, who taught them the recipes for their favorite childhood desserts. Channon and Jason continue to keep their father's legacy alive and are paving the way for future Black business owners while bringing their culture to Atlanta. (11Alive.com WXIA)
Today in Sandy Springs:
- Paint Like Bob Ross! At 6005 Glenridge Dr. (10:00 AM)
From my notebook:
- Attention drivers. Riverside Drive at River Valley Road has been closed due to a downed tree and power line. The city asks that you avoid the area until it has been cleared. (Sandy Springs, Georgia: City News via Facebook)
- Did you see that unidentified object flying over metro Atlanta? It was just a blimp! An AirSign Airship blimp stopped at the Dalton Municipal Airport in Georgia where officials shared photos and joked about it in a Facebook post. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- The Sandy Springs Fire Department conducted a training exercise earlier this week. During the exercise, firefighters rappelled down from the roof of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and waved to patients inside! You can see photos from the exercise at the link.
