2 Dead In 6-Vehicle Crash Near Georgia Welcome Center

A speeding vehicle in a rear parking lot hit another vehicle, causing a chain reaction with four other vehicles being hit.

PORT WENTWORTH, GA — A deadly crash near Interstate 95 south and a Georgia Welcome Center claimed the lives of two people Wednesday, state authorities said Thursday.

The Georgia State Patrol said troopers responded around 7:15 p.m. to the scene at mile marker 111.

Though drivers of four of the vehicles escaped, the driver of the second vehicle was likely asleep and died in the wreck, the GSP said.

The driver of the speeding vehicle also died, the GSP said. Authorities don't yet know if the driver experienced a medical event.

Atlanta News First shared video footage of the scene, which showed a large blaze and smoke from one of the vehicles filling the air.

The news outlet reported the crash involved five 18-wheeler trucks, as well as a truck hauling a camper.

The two people who died were not identified.

Mile marker 111 on I-95 is located in Port Wentworth in Chatham County, about 11 miles from Savannah's historic district.
