2 Saved From Downed Plane In GA Marsh

An unidentified aircraft recently went down near the Little Black River into a Georgia marsh, leaving two people to be rescued.

SAVANNAH, GA — Two people were rescued Saturday from a marsh near the Little Black River after their downed aircraft landed in a marsh, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The small aircraft went down around 4:15 p.m. Guardsmen said the Savannah Airport Air Traffic Control Center sent out an alert requesting assistance with the aircraft from Charleston, South Carolina watchstanders.

Once on scene, a rescue swimmer was immediately deployed to assess the condition of the pilot, said Lt. Cmdr. Jon Sapundjieff, Coast Guard Air Station Savannah aircraft commander.

The two people who were rescued were airlifted to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Guardsmen said they did not report medical concerns.

“I appreciate the assistance from the tower controller and the airport crash crew at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport for making this case go smoothly," Sapundjieff said in a news release.

A Chatham County Fire Department boat crew also responded to the scene but could not reach the aircraft, the Coast Guard said.

It is unknown what caused the unidentified aircraft to go down.
