The sheriff's office said it is appreciative of the support received for Wilcher from friends, family and the community.

Chatham County Chief Deputy Gary Taylor, who is overseeing the sheriff's office in Wilcher's absence, requested at a news conference privacy for Wilcher's family.

"While (Wilcher's) condition is still serious, we are grateful that our prayers, along with yours, are working. He has been improving every day," authorities said Wednesday.

Taylor asked people to pray for the command staff at the sheriff's office.

"We have a tall order," Taylor said. "We have a tall task and what's under our care here at the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, and we take it very seriously. These men and women ... do it with a lot of pride."

Authorities said anyone who desires to send in a card or a note can do so by mailing it to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, 1050 Carl Griffin Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31405.
