Family members took to Facebook to state Badon was visiting Hunt, Texas to celebrate the Fourth of July with her friends when their cars were washed away by the flooding.

"They were staying in a home on a hill along the river. At 4am this morning, a flash flood came through and washed their cars away. It happened so quickly with so much water, they could not get in the attic. The owner’s son ... called his dad as it happened. Then, he & 2 others got washed away by debris. Joyce Catherine was the last person ... spoke to before the phone went dead," the family wrote Friday.

Before her death, Badon sent her family a final text message reading, "We're being washed away," Louis Deppe, leader of a volunteer group, told the Agence France-Presse. Deppe said the phone went dead afterward, per the AFP report.

SCAD sent their condolences to Badon's family and friends, the AJC reported.
