Missing Couple's Remains Found In GA Pond, Family Confirms: Report

BRUNSWICK, GA — The family of a missing New York couple confirmed on Thursday their remains were found in a Georgia pond, ABC 7 New York reported.

Glynn County Police on Saturday said a human bone was found in a submerged Lincoln Continental last week in a pond near a Brunswick hotel in the area of Interstate 95 and New Jesup Highway. Florida's Sunshine State Sonar Team made the discovery, police said.

The pond was drained to see if additional human remains were located, police said.

The Camden County Sheriff's Office, which assisted in the investigation, shared photos of the soiled vehicle.

The Continental matched the description of a vehicle being driven by Charles and Catherine Romer, a couple who disappeared in April 1980, police said.

The Romers, who were in their 70s, are from Scarsdale in Westchester County, New York, ABC 7 reported.

The news outlet obtained the following family statement:

"We are deeply saddened and equally relieved that our grandparents Charles and Catherine Romer's 44-year mystery disappearance has been solved. While this discovery brings closure, it still has been very emotional. Sadly, Charles Romer Jr, Jim Romer and Frank Heller are not with us to share this momentous turn of events and to know their parents will finally be laid to rest in peace. We want to express our gratitude to Glynn County Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Sunshine State Sonar for their time, dedication and expertise. A special appreciation and thanks goes out to Jason Souhrada Myrtle Beach, SC. Jason pinpointed the exact location of the vehicle and shared his findings with all the agencies involved."

At the time of their disappearance, the Romers were returning to New York from a Miami vacation when they checked into the hotel near where their car was found, ABC 7 reported.

A reported possible theory from one of the investigating divers is that the Romers may have mistakenly reversed the car and landed in the pond, but a cause of death has not been confirmed.
