Here are the top three stories in Savannah today:

  1. The Savannah Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into a homicide that occurred at a convenience store Thursday night, Jun. 22, located at the intersection of Abercorn and East Duffy Streets. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a man who had sustained gunshot wounds, and despite being taken to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities are actively searching for the suspect involved in the incident. (WJCL News Savannah)
  2. The Chatham County Commission addressed the concerning rise in overdose deaths during their meeting on Friday, Jun. 23. According to a presentation by the County's Counter Narcotics Team, overdose deaths have doubled compared to the same period last year. The team is also focusing on drug education for teenagers, as drug use among young people is increasing. Additionally, the commission voted on finalizing the budget, which includes funds for road projects, addressing drainage and flooding issues, upgrading the 911 dispatch system, and addressing unpaid fire fees. (WTOC)
  3. A Savannah couple is praising their family pet, Zeus, for acting as a guard dog and helping the police apprehend an intruder. When Zeus, a 50-pound mixed-breed dog, sensed something strange outside their home, he started barking and "went crazy," alerting his owners Wilbur Crout and his wife. The dog chased the intruder over a fence, and the family was able to hold him until the police arrived. (WSAV-TV)

Today in Savannah:

Saturday, June 24

  • Butterfly Mask Craft At Skidaway Island State Park (11:00 AM)
  • Food Truck & Vendor Festival At Vintage Special Event Center (12:00 PM)
  • Amy Grant At Lucas Theatre For The Arts (8:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Chatham County is experiencing extended emergency response times, with an average of 17 minutes for emergency medical services to respond to an emergency, compared to the national average of seven minutes. Chatham 911 can only dispatch to fire and police departments, so for medical emergencies, they must relay the details to the Chatham Emergency Services Center, which adds up to three minutes to the response time.
