How to make your own football field

2020 has certainly been a year of uncertainty, but one thing we're certain about is that we're ready for football season. And what better way to enjoy the cooling weather and best season of the year than by making a miniature football field of your own in the backyard?

If you have children, and your house sits on a spacious property, one of the best gifts that you can give your kids is building a backyard football field. The great thing about having your football field is that your kids can practice their skills anytime they want to, and you can still utilize the area for other purposes.

Plus, it's pretty easy to set up and can be as temporary or permanent as you'd like!

1. Prepare Your Backyard

Choose a relatively flat spaceStart by cutting or trimming your grass, then remove any weeds that may have started growing, and keep your lawn well maintained. Take measurements so you’ll know how large the football field will be, and the size that you will eat up from your property. This will also help you find where your endzones and goals go.

2. Purchase and prepare your goals

Now is the time to decide whether you want this to be permanent or temporary. If you intend on being in this home for years to come, great! It'd probably be best to invest in some heavier duty posts. The other option is temporary goals such as inflatable or plastic goals. Inflatable goals tend to be the most recommended as it's safer for children and readily available at most sports goods stores.

3. Mark your end zones

After you’ve taken the measurements of the space that you will utilize to create a field, mark each of the four corners with cones. After marking them, mark your space into twelve equal sections, which will be your yard lines. To make your markings straight, you can use a meter stick or any other long, straight objects that you have. When marking, you can use any of the following:

  • Spray paint
  • Chalk
  • Nylon string

4. Prepare enough gear

If you're doing this for your kids, odds are you just need a football and that's it. However, if you're going to have other people use this space down the line, you can invest in flag football equipment, mesh jersey's, benches for the teams, and chairs or benches for a spectator space.

5. Start playing!

Finally! The time has come to use your new space! After all the hard work, don’t forget the most important thing: put your backyard football field to good use and have fun.
