Fire Station No. 5 Due for Completion in Early August

Despite some earlier rain delays, construction of Smyrna’s Fire Station No. 5 is back on schedule and is due for completion Aug. 9.

“The interior is dried in so now all the interior mechanics, the sprinkler system and the electrical and the heating and air and the plumbing—all that’s being done inside the building,” said Deputy Fire Chief Roy Acree. “Once all that’s done the finish work—the paint, ceilings and floor coverings—all that will be last.”

The fire station sits on the east side of Cooper Lake Road where it forks with Old Cooper Lake Road, an abandoned roadbed. Acree said Old Cooper Lake Road will serve as the rear driveway to the station, but fire engines will exit from the front of the building onto Cooper Lake Road.

The $1.4 million project is being funded by a federal stimulus grant, but the city is contributing $354,4333 to the construction. Once completed it will serve Smyrna’s southwestern residents. This will reduce response time to an area where residents sometimes have to wait 14 minutes for emergency service, said Acree.

Croy Engineering is managing the project. Jim Croy offered an update at a recent Smyrna City Council meeting.

“We’re working with the city staff to look at a couple items, the information technology items for the fire station and the furniture and fixtures for the station,” he said. “So we’ll be finalizing those and putting out the bids very shortly. Those will all be covered in the budget for the project. We’re well within budget and we think everything is moving smoothly.”
