SMYRNA, GA — As Cobb County officials declare a COVID-19 state of emergency and local public health experts plea for residents to wear masks and get vaccinated, the city of Smyrna is offering free COVID-19 vaccines every Friday for the next month.

Free vaccinations will take place each Friday from 1-4 p.m. through the end of September at Smyrna Community Center, located at 200 Village Green Circle. Only the Pfizer vaccine is available. City officials ask residents to bring an ID, and anyone age 12-15 is asked to bring a birth certificate or passport as identification.

A total of 56 percent of Cobb County residents — or 420,922 residents — have had at least one COVID-19 vaccine as of 3 p.m. Sunday, and 49 percent have been fully vaccinated, or 370,306 residents, Georgia Department of Public Health data shows. In the last two weeks, there have been 464 positive cases in Cobb County per 100,000 residents.

The rising cases and low vaccination rates have put a strain on local hospitals, including Wellstar Cobb and Kennestone. Hospital staff had to turn ambulances away due to overcrowding just last week, and the emergency departments are still considered "overcrowded" or "severely overcrowded" as of Monday afternoon, according to the Georgia Coordinating Center.

"Right now, our hospitals are very full, and staffing is very low. They need help, so let us all pitch in together," Memark said in a video plea to residents regarding masks and vaccinations, which can be viewed here. "Please get vaccinated and wear your mask indoors as we fight this."

According to the Georgia Geospatial Information Office's COVID-19 Data Hub, there have been 3,754 COVID-19-related hospitalizations in Cobb County since the pandemic began, and 69,830 total cases — meaning 5.38 percent of positive cases resulted in a hospital stay.

Cobb County has lost 1,065 residents to COVID-19 so far, meaning 1.53 percent of the county's positive cases have ended in death.
