Cobb Police Investigate Crash That Injured One, Shut Down I-285 During Morning Rush Hour
Cobb police are investigating the rig accident that shut down part of Interstate 285 during Tuesday morning rush hour traffic.
COBB COUNTY, GA — Cobb County police are investigating a tractor-trailer accident that seriously injured one person and shut down Interstate 285 southbound at Atlanta Road for at least three hours during morning rush hour Tuesday.
Investigators said a black 2007 BMW 530i was headed southbound on I-285 and drove into another lane, where a white 2008 Freightliner pulling an enclosed trailer was driving. As the BMW came into the lane, the back of the BMW collided with the front of the Freightliner.
After hitting the Freightliner, the BMW — driven by 33-year-old Dominique Heyward of Powder Springs — crashed into the median wall and came to rest under the Atlanta Road bridge. The Freightliner, driven by 50-year-old Troy Russell of Antwerp, Ohio, stopped in the left lane south of Heyward's car.

Heyward was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuires. Russell was not injured in the crash, police said.
