Plant McDonough Smokestack Demolition Begins Soon
But Smyrna-Vinings still has a while to say goodbye to what some call a landmark and others call an eyesore.
Demolition of the Plant McDonough Smokestack is set to begin soon, but Smyrna-Vinings won’t see an immediate difference in the skyline for some time.
Georgia Power made plans to dismantle the smokestack . Now there’s no use for the smokestack and officials have made plans to tear it down
Lynn Wallace, Georgia Power’s media representative, said officials at Plant McDonough recently awarded a contract for the stack’s demolition, which should begin the week of July 23.

“What they’re going to be doing is they’re going to be doing all internal stuff, which will not be visible to the public,” she said. “Beyond that we don’t have any specific details.”
What is known is that the smokestack won’t go out with a bang. Wallace said it won’t be imploded, but will be dismantled slowly piece by piece.
