SuperSmyrna Strikes Again

Thirty four volunteers turned out for a morning school ground maintenance project at  Saturday, May 5. The wonderful little school of about 600 students is located off of South Cobb Drive near Windy Hill.

Attendees included civic leaders from the , plus about 20 from the school (including the Principal Terry Floyd, teachers and parents and kids). People like Lamar Jones, David Wine and Ty Cobb sliced their way through hedges, shrubs and assorted obstacles with an impressive array of gas powered tools. Others pulled weeds, swept, and took care of anything else they found that needed tending. Ron Nash came early, stayed late and then returned the next day to plant a rose bush on his own initiative. 

Asked why he participated, Smyrna Rotarian Ken Crowell said, “School budgets are being cut and the resources are being allocated, rightfully so, away from landscaping budgets. Our Rotary club can't help much with student instruction but we can make a difference in making the school grounds a place the kids and teachers can be proud of.”

"I was so pleasantly surprised to see all of the people that showed up to pitch in,” said Jonathan Tabb, the school’s social worker. “To see community members/leaders, school staff, and parents working alongside each other was a beautiful sight. It was a great thing to bring all these stakeholders together to serve and raise awareness for our great school."

Principal Terry Floyd added, “Belmont Hills is proud to have the generous support of time, energy, effort, and resources of such a dedicated group of people. When the community supports our school in ways like it did last Saturday, it encourages us to continue the life changing work we do every day. Thank you for giving so generously to our school. The grounds look great!” 

The project was organized by volunteer organization SuperSmyrna, which is really simply a coordinating group for various civic organizations. SuperSmyrna was created in May 2009. Its member groups include the Smyrna Area Council of the , the Smyrna Business Association, Smyrna Golden K Kiwanis, Smyrna Rotary Club, and others.

“Initially we wanted to be able to take on projects that were bigger than what our individual organizations could handle,” says co-founder Narayan Sengupta. “However, now anyone can participate in our volunteer projects without having to join a service organization. It’s open to all; there are no dues or anything. It’s just a great way for people to have fun getting together, socializing and doing something good for their community.”
